9 months today.... I've earned my wings!

So... here's how it all began... I was sitting in a waiting room this week reading through a Parents magazine.  Maybe People or Self or even O Magazine would have been a healthier, more well-rounded choice.  But, nine months in and I'm a little wrapped up in my new gig.  I get to the back, to those silly little editorials on the last page that I sometimes wish I had written, and it is entitled "Helicopter Parents".  I think... "fun stuff... I love to hammer on that type."  Except as I read on, I realize that I AM that type.  What has happened?  I think, I should tear this right out to show my sister, except that I know when I do, she will have more material to work with.  So I just decide to begin to work on it... this is not who I want to be.  I do not want to be a worrier, a Debbie Downer, a planner of what to do in a "worst case scenario."

I think about this for a few days... one Friday afternoon, I tried to take a small step back from the helicopter.  We've had  some visitors over when the babies have been in the pool.  People may think that I'm rude when I don't carry on much of a conversation when the babies are swimming.  Multi-tasking is not for me when my babies are in the water.  At one point I said to someone, "I will never have the babies in the water when I am by myself."  I got the "you're a crazy lady" look.  And I thought, "That's OK, you don't understand, you do not have three babies all at the same time."

Back to that Friday afternoon... I thought that I could handle all the babies in the pool by myself.  (Do not worry... this ends well).  I put a towel right beside the pool so that I could put the babies in directly from the towel.  I usually use a swim diaper, but I thought our chances of clear water were good based upon the day's diapers, so we went skinny dipping.  They were really skinny slipping... all over the pool.  Those swim diapers are good for something other than keeping the water relatively clear.  This slippery situation made me nervous, so I just jumped in with them, fully clothed.  You would think that I had greased all three in Vaseline before putting them in the pool.  West was in a constant state of trying to go overboard on to the patio to catch the dogs and Jack and Lilibeth were like fish.  OK, I'm not handling this as well as I'd hoped.  After about four underwater, wide-eyed baby rescues, one where I have all three in my arms at once, I decide that we must get out.  The towel by the pool came in handy again as I deposited three wet babies out of the pool.  We made our way, one by one to the kitchen floor where I called Klint and said in my most calm crazy lady voice "When will you be home?"  I was hoping not to have to attempt bath time, another water situation, without some assistance.

When he arrived home within a few minutes, he found us like this.  Lilibeth peed her towel in the kitchen, so we moved to the nursery on the concrete floor which Jack immediately peed and then continued his swimming adventure in his own pee until I noticed.

With Daddy on the scene, we were able to recover, bathe, put on our pj's and take a quick train ride around the house to make us all feel better before we went to bed.  I say we and I mean we.  At 6:15 p.m. on Friday night and we were all in our pj's for the duration.  It was a long day, folks.

Nine month milestones....
West is on the move!  One day early last week he crawled (forward this time!), then became so interested in his new sitting up skills that he didn't do it again until Friday.  He crawls forward to chase the dogs, who run from him.  He is pulling up, so his bed was the first to be dropped.  He has lots more to say now that he has mastered some moving skills.  We love the way he talks to the newest person in the room.  He says, "Hey there!  Look at today me!"  Update.... as of today (his nine month birthday) he is EVERYWHERE!  He has a new passion: flip-flops!  He crawls over to the nearest flip-flop and tries to eat it before I can stop him.  He has even tried to eat a flop while on my foot!  It appears that we are building our immune systems this summer.

Sweet baby boy

Lilibeth has five teeth (three on top and two on bottom)!  She is the front runner in the tooth department.  I told Klint recently that I think the tooth fairy should drop off money for cutting a tooth.  It's much harder than losing one.  Lilibeth appears to be slightly interested in moving.  She is so strong, but seems to know that we will happily carry her any place she chooses.  She loves digging in the toy box to find the perfect thing.  When she does, she then spends her time trying to keep it from her brothers who are toy snatchers!  When she gets fussy, which is unusual, we run to her closet to show her dresses and bows.  This always does the trick.  Here she is in her "helmet" or fascinator to amuse the boys.  They loved it!  Fancy loves making Lilibeth happy with an accessory.

We are all fascinated and delighted by Lilibeth's helmet, especially Lilibeth!

Jack is so funny!  He talks all the time!  I cannot wait to find out what he is saying to me!  He is not crawling forward (still backward), but he is working on other strength training moves.  He does a complete push up regularly and holds in this position.  He moves anywhere his heart desires by rolling.  It is a pretty funny sight.  He just rolls and smiles.  He loves to roll to the toy box, sit up and start digging.  Today we took a walk and Jack talked to Klint and me the ENTIRE time.  The boy has lots to discuss.
Here Jack is grinning because Duke came by with his helmet.  Duke's is a little snazzier than they boys and he is wearing it in solidarity with Jack and West until they are helmet-free!

Speaking of helmets... we had our five week evaluation and the boys are doing great!  Their heads are growing... and growing rounder!  Jack started out at a 10 and West an 11 (according to the orthotist this was severe), by two weeks, they had both moved into the "moderate" range and as of our last eval, both boys are at a 5, only one (point?) away from the "normal" range.  We hope to be helmet-free by September since the helmets are only built for three months worth of growth.

I think this has started since our 8 month post... One night one of the boys was wiggling all over the place while Klint tried to feed him.  When we put him on the floor, he settled in and held his bottle on his own... here come the Boppies for all.  I don't remember if it was Jack or West... that's why I must write this stuff down!  Now, sadly, they would prefer to feed themselves.  I knew this day would come too soon for me.

We love this funny guy (and his mom!)

Blueberry makes us smile!

Friends
We spent the July 4th weekend with family in Walhalla.  It was our first road trip!  Eight cousins means lots of fun and three babies means lots to pack.  With help from two other vehicles, we got it all there.

Alicia and Klint playing with the babies in Walhalla
If you looked at our car, you would think we packed the whole house.  We left the swings.  The babies take a cat nap between 11-12 for about 20 minutes in the swings.  I think they are too big for them, but when we try to give up that tiny nap, we unravel.  I asked Klint what we are going to do when the babies get so big the swings won't go anymore.  His plan?  Put a boat motor on those swings and keep on rolling!  I think he's a little bit serious.  Lilibeth had to take her cat nap on daddy without the swing in Walhalla!

See my two teeth?

Just a little wrasslin' match

Happy 4th!

Love this pic!  Lilibeth is trying to get Daddy's attention to let him know that Jack just stole her bow.  Look at his face... he knows he's been caught!

Just my size!

Hahaha!  I know what's in triple used bath water!

Can you see who is not a big fan of "grow greens"?  (Spinach, green bean and green pea mix)

There is another adult present.... Helicopter parent or not, I'm sticking to my words this time, I will not have three in the water by myself again!

Eight months today!

The fact that we are four months away from the big day is absolutely amazing!  I was near the hospital yesterday where the babies were born and I thought of how far Jack, Lilibeth and West have come in such a short amount of time!  It doesn't seem so long ago that Klint and I were "visiting" our babies in the NICU... their home sweet home for the first six weeks of their lives!  Now we visit our sweet peas each night in their nursery and watch them sleep... it's one of the only times throughout the day when they are still!

Here's what's happening:

Jack has his two bottom teeth!  He has caught up with West and Lilibeth and feels so very proud.  He now grabs his spoon with each bite just to prove that his teeth are super strong.  This makes feeding slightly messy!  Jack studies everything.  He keeps his eye on me at all times and gives me the biggest grins and hugs!  I totally underestimated how happy a sweet smile can make a mama!  Jack becomes interested in any toy that someone else is playing with and snatches it right up.  Sharing... so how do I communicate this skill to an eight month old?

Lilibeth is making all sorts of funny faces!  She makes us laugh.  She wakes up so happy every morning.  Her cousin M was visiting earlier this week and he sweetly looked over at the book that she and Fancy were reading.  She growled at him and threw her arms out over her book to show him in no uncertain terms that she had no interest in sharing.  Uh-oh!  Lilibeth will learn how to hold her own sooner rather than later with all of these boys!  One of our friends paid Lilibeth a high compliment on Sunday.  He said that she has a "kind face."  She does... she is such a sweet baby girl.  Just don't mess with her books!

West is on the move!  He scoots backward all the time.  I hear that this is the first step toward crawling, but West is understandably frustrated by moving further and further away from the object of his desire!  He is so independent and can entertain himself with his toys.  He is always the most interested in the newest person in the room and grins and winks at that person to attract their attention.  He nearly threw himself out of my arms at a restaurant last week to get the attention of the woman at the next table.  His charm and rugged good looks have not failed him yet!

West and Jack got helmets last week.  Do not be alarmed...  They are fine!  We have heard some interesting comments...
"Are they OK?"  Yes.
"Did we drop them?"  Not yet.
"Is that a bike helmet?"  Ummmm...no.

I say that they were "all squoze up" in me.  This caused some flattening on the back of their heads that fortunately, can be corrected within the first year of life with a helmet or "cranial remolding device."  The good news is that the boys should only have to wear their new gear for a few months to correct the flattening.  The best news is that they do not seem to be bothered one bit by the helmets.  Their daddy and I miss kissing their little flat heads, but soon we will kiss our boys with their little Charlie Brown-esque heads!  A few months early on to correct this little issue will hopefully be worth it in the end for West and Jack.  There is a downside... the helmets and their little heads smell like the inside of a teenage boy's favorite baseball cap in August.  There is no amount of rubbing alcohol or shampoo that can compete with this funk.  Their sweet Duke went to Academy and bought a baseball helmet to wear "in solidarity" with Jack and West until they are out of the helmets.  What a good grandfather! Pics of all three guys in their helmets to come in a future post...

Jack reads with S.  These babies literally devour books.  They get so mad at me for trying to read to them.  "Hand it over, mama.  Books are for eating!"

What do these self-sufficient kids need me for?

Lilibeth meets L

Lilibeth is not amused... swimming in diapers is not stylish.

G & P's Sunday visit

Ummm.... it's a little bit chilly in here!

The boys kickin' back

Jack loves the water

West's favorite place!

Clean bean!

So independent!

Oopsie... I'm about to lose a kid under the couch!

Choo-choo!
Our "Happy Birthday Breakfast" is all over our happy faces!
Nurse Lauren visited to celebrate 8 months with us... thanks for all of your help in getting us to this point, Lauren!
West loves pretty ladies!
Jack and T having some fun
So smart... our little engineer takes apart the rug and eats the first initial of his name!

West thought it was hilarious when he peed his helmet during a diaper change.  He napped without a helmet and got in an extra bath for the day.  Smart boy!

I'm off to bed...  I have to be up early and ready for all sorts of fun as we kick off our ninth month!

Sweet summertime and some firsts!

The past few weeks have brought about our "new normal."  That is a good thing.  We are getting out, having company in without asking for a current shot record... just kidding (but only a little bit!) and experiencing some summertime firsts.  In the past two weeks Jack, Lilibeth and West have gone from sitting to sitting and reaching without falling (for the most part).  I see creeping and crawling in our near future!  I hear that this is not something that I should look forward to, but I am!  I tell Klint, "I'm so sad that this is going so fast!" but in almost the same breath I am talking about how excited I am that someone or two or three is doing something new and totally gifted :)

Here are a few of the things that we have been up to:

We love to eat!  Jack is thanking Ben for making him a great lunch.  We are eating peas, carrots, sweet potato, squash, avacado, banana, blueberries, rice cereal, green beans (we turn our noses up to green beans!), mango, pear, peaches... I'm sure I'm leaving something out.  Many, many thanks to our fabulous chef, Jill, for making us such yum-o baby food!

Here is Jack.  He was born 7.5 months ago weighing 4 pounds, 8 ounces.  Mama has been feeding Jack, West and Lilibeth well.  Jack weighs about 19 pounds now.  He is wearing some pajamas that are size 9 months.  (In his defense, I think it is a 9 months "slim" edition.)

Oopsie!  Jack seems to have outgrown his 9 months "slim" edition PJ's.  We were tired of those anyway!  This pic is especially for you, Linz!

Lilibeth and Papa playing

Choo-choo!  Here we come.  Thanks, Marsha!  I know it is intended for our great excursions out of the home, but it is a great help when we don't know what to do but cry!

An armload of boys

A shopping trip with Ben

Lilibeth is enjoying herself thoroughly

West: "When are we leaving?"

Jack: "And why are we here in the first place?"

The girls had a great time!  The boys had a time.  It is so nice to be out.  I am working on making my loading and unloading a little more efficient.  It gets better every time.  We use a single stroller and a double stroller to avoid stares and comments.  Most comments are very kind... others make me need to go home and brush up on some scripture.  Back to the loading.  On our first shopping outing with Fancy, it seemed to take about 15 minutes to unload, then another 15 to reload.  Our trip with Ben was a little faster.  On our most recent trip to Costco on Saturday (bad idea!), I think I whittled the load and unload down to about 5 minutes each.  It's funny the things I focus on in this new experience!

Sweet boys sharing

We knew that wouldn't last long!

Thanks, Becky!  We LOVE the Zebra pool!  Daddy filled it up for us today.  Let the fun begin!

The children would like to report that a swim diaper can really ruin your Summer 2011 swimwear look.  Elmo is so 2010.

Little Lilibeth.  Klint and I PROMISED as wanna-be parents that we would NEVER let a daughter of ours wear a two-piece swimsuit.  How many words will I have to eat in this parenting process?  Let's amend that... we will never let our daughter out of diapers wear a two-piece swimsuit.  What is a mama to do when Baby Gap sold me this cute little number for $3 last summer?  Well, that's what I thought, too!

West is a fish!  We couldn't get him to sit much.  He wanted to be on his back so that he could kick those little feet in his pool!

Happy times

Did you already get our season passes to Splash Town?

Jack had a great time batting at the Zebra's head on the pool

A few things I love about Jack right this minute:
He is so observant and he has a great laugh!  One morning this week we noticed that Jack was coughing to get our attention.  He had to have a swallow study a few months ago (which turned out fine) to determine why he was choking.  The big medical determination: he's just a choker-type kid.  All this to say, when Jack coughs, we respond quickly.... and this week he picked up on that.  I've got the boy coughing wolf!

A few things I love about Lilibeth right this minute:
She's sitting with her daddy and she adores him!  She is currently growling at him.  This trick is a few weeks old.  She growls, but she also laughs, laughs, laughs!   In the past week, she has become pretty loud.  She talks to her brothers all day long.  She is probably the most stable while sitting and loves playing on the floor.

A few things I love about West right this minute:
He loves the water.  Every night during bath time, he kicks enough to swim across a pool of Olympian proportion.  He has a great belly laugh.  His daddy brings this out in him.  I keep trying.  He is kind to his mother and laughs an obligatory laugh, but lets loose when daddy gets home!  He loves music and will calm immediately when we start jamming to Barnyard Moosical or some silly business like that!

So excited about summertime with our family and friends!
